Bus Rapid Transit coming to busy Tacoma-Spanaway route

A 14.4-mile stretch between downtown Tacoma and Spanaway is Pierce Transit’s busiest route. Soon, a new line of service that merges the speed of light rail and the ease and flexibility of a bus will bring big improvements for riders.

Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) is designed to carry larger numbers of riders with greater speed, reliability and frequency than a standard fixed-route bus. The South Sound’s first BRT project, which will replace a portion of the current Route 1 between Tacoma and Spanaway, is about 60 percent designed. To learn more about BRT and project plans for the new service, plan to attend a live-streaming public meeting 5-6:30 pm, Sept. 23. Bring your questions and learn more about:

  • Current design update
  • Project funding and budget
  • Roundabouts
  • Property impacts
  • Traffic impacts
  • Community outreach
  • State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA)
  • BRT System Expansion Study
  • Project partner updates

Join the Zoom meeting.

If you’re unable to attend the meeting, you can learn about the project and share your feedback here.
