City Spotlight – Bonney Lake
Bonney Lake is a distinctive community in east Pierce County that combines convenience with natural beauty. Surrounded by stunning views and outdoor recreation opportunities, the city also boasts thriving businesses that offer a wide range of dining and shopping options, from locally owned shops and restaurants to national retailers.
A large area in Bonney Lake, known as Eastown, is being developed under a Development Agreement for the Peak 410 project. Peak 410 is an 847,335 sq ft warehouse currently housing the Peak Paddle & Racket Club, an indoor pickleball club. It will soon also host GoodRoots Northwest’s new online grocery model, supported by the nation’s largest climate-controlled locker network. Peak 410 is also the future location of East Pierce Fire & Rescue Logistics Center, Starlit Quilts, and Cascadia Pizza. Developers of Peak 410 announced recently that they are preparing to start on Building 4, a 56k sq ft building with an anticipated availability in the summer of 2026.
With a successful shopping center, expansion is always on the horizon. Mountain View Marketplace is no exception as it continues to expand. Coming soon to the Costco anchored center are Panera Bread, Aspen Dental, Verizon, Kre8tive Kidz, and Premier Storage. Mountain View Chiropractic recently relocated there, joined by Happy Lemon, and Casabella Nails & Spa.
Now with a population of 23,450 people, Bonney Lake played an interesting role in the early history of the Washington Territory. In the 1850, Puget Sound residents were eager to divert the wagon train migration from Oregon Territory to Western Washington to increase the area’s population. The quickest way to do this was to create a road over the Cascades, shortening the route by more than 200 miles. The old Naches Trail became known as the Immigrant Road, and the first wagon train to use the still unfinished road crossed the mountains in the fall of 1853 arriving with settlers in the Bonney Lake area.
Jump forward 175 years, and the current city of Bonney Lake is filled with successful restaurants and retailers, manufacturers and medical practitioners. While growth is primarily occurring in Eastown (industrial) and Midtown (commercial), other areas are home to distinctive businesses like Mad Max Cars, BoxDrop Bonney Lake, Fleet Feet, Ben Franklin Crafts, Giant Lifting and Sick Trophies. And did you know Hops ‘n Drops and Trappers Sushi both started in Bonney Lake?
The City of Bonney Lake continues to look to the future and how they can improve their municipality. Like so many areas of the Puget Sound region, traffic mitigation continues to be a focus of the city team including the commercial truck traffic at the Eastown area of Bonney Lake. As part of the Peak 410 development agreement, the developer installed a roundabout to improve traffic flow to the warehouses. To enhance online access to services, the city is launching a new website early next year. Additionally, they are in the process of transitioning to a new permit and utility billing software.
