DuPont – The Island Oasis
Located between Tacoma and Olympia on the west side of I-5, there is the charming city of DuPont. According to Keith Campbell, DuPont City Administrator, “We really are like an island oasis with no neighbors on any side of us and only two egress points in and out.” Bordered by Joint Base Lewis McChord, bodies of water and a major freeway, the City of DuPont has a tremendous sense of pride and elevated levels of community.
“In other areas of the Puget Sound, you don’t really think about leaving one city when you cross the boundary line into another city. But, here in DuPont you know when you are IN DuPont,” said Campbell.
With a mission to elevate the quality of life in their community, the city was incorporated in 1951 and is home to 10,180 people. “It is a charming city that is very safe with low amounts of crime and low incidents of fire and police activity,” Campbell noted.
The city is home to a vibrant retail community near the I-5 entrance, a championship golf course that often hosts PGA events, and a thriving Amazon facility. The future will see the remediation of the old dynamite factory often referred to as the Old Fort Lake area. With a vision of creating a new residentially focused neighborhood and supporting commercial, entertainment and civic uses, the Old Fort Lake Subarea plan is a collaboration with the Nisqually Tribe. The area holds significant historical value as it was the home of the first Fort Nisqually, built in 1833. The future also includes the redevelopment of the former State Farm building with several developers putting forth options for how to best utilize the building and area.
Today, DuPont continues to be a hub for manufacturing and industrial activity. Some examples of industrial centers and related companies in the area include:
-
- Tempur Sealy International, a bedding manufacturer
- Basalite Concrete Products.
DuPont’s strategic location with access to various transportation networks, including roadways, water, rail, and air, enhances its appeal as an industrial center, especially for businesses involved in international trade and transportation. This makes it a desirable location for companies looking to locate to Washington State.
DuPont continues to celebrate their heritage through thoughtful, paced development to ensure they meet their goals to be a welcoming and inclusive community.
