Statement on Tacoma/South Sound bid for Amazon’s HQ2

October 5, 2017 – Tacoma, WA

The Economic Development Board for Tacoma-Pierce County (EDB) confirmed today that its forthcoming proposal for Amazon’s HQ2 represents a unified approach for a single South Sound bid. The EDB is leading the efforts to gather the vast amounts of information needed to generate the proposal, with partners across Pierce County contributing their respective expertise.

Tacoma/South Sound is poised to deliver and ready to address Amazon’s growth needs directly. We offer superior connectivity and proximity for HQ2, as well as to the region and world.

Bruce Kendall, CEO and president of the EDB, said, “In addition to the EDB staff, the strong team working on the Tacoma/South Sound proposal includes leadership and representatives of the City of Tacoma, professional site selectors who evaluate potential sites for a living, and marketing experts. The Mayor of Tacoma, Marilyn Strickland, County Executive Bruce Dammeier, and Congressman Derek Kilmer are each playing critical roles, as are key private sector leaders. Each person brings considerable expertise and valuable insights into what our region has to offer Amazon.”

Tacoma’s downtown business district is just 35 miles away from Amazon’s headquarters in Seattle. Amazon employees who live in South Sound now attest to the great quality of life and the affordable cost of living. The South Sound has the workforce talent, educational pipelines, appealing business costs, and available land for building to make Tacoma/South Sound an attractive area for future development by Amazon and other companies.
