Tacoma Public School Prop 1 & 2

On February 10th, the Tacoma Public Schools have two replacement measures on the ballot for voters to consider.  With a goal to maintain safe neighborhood schools, where every student has access to a high-quality education, technology and academic programs, TPS is asking for your support of Proposition 1 and Proposition 2.

The first proposition would fund 17% of educational programs and operations for day-to-day operations not covered by state funds including classroom teachers, nurses, counselors, librarians, paraeducators, custodians and coaches, plus up to date books and classroom learning materials.   This proposition would fund programs to keep students on track for graduation, Career & Technical Education, improve access for students and staff with physical disabilities, high-achieving students and college entry exams, pre-school and after-school programs, arts, music, athletics and other extra-curricular activities.

Proposition 1 will maintain safe schools through repair of roofs, mechanical systems and extending the life of its buildings.  It will allow for improvements to school safety and security, fire alarm systems, 911 communications and earthquake safety.  With up-to-date plumbing and HVAC systems the district will be assured they maintain clean air and safe water for all the students and staff.

The renewal of Proposition 2, a Technology Levy, will maintain computer and device access for students and staff.  It will upgrade and improve classroom learning technology and provide a help desk for students, plus maintain and repair devices.  Online tracking of student progress, including homework, attendance, grades and credits toward graduation is paid for with these funds.  The safety, security and privacy of data for students and staff as well as electronic security systems will be paid for with the passing of this proposition.  It will also include network, phone and intercom systems and software upgrades with staff training.

Proposition 1 will add $2.23 per $1000 of assessed value and Proposition 2 will add $.79 per $1000 of assessed value for technology.  Ballots will be mailed out on January 23rd with a mail back by date of February 10th.  For more information, visit TacomaSchools.org/Vote
