Innovative newest addition to hot Lakewood landscape takes prefabricated homes to a whole new level. And soon the autonomous, self-sustainable, intelligent houses will be manufactured in Lakewood. The EDB is lending a hand by connecting Haus Pro LLC with the local supply chain and workforce development partners. Hiring is slated to begin in June.

This is not your grandmother’s mobile home. The ultra-smart—and ultra-cool—houses feature 23-engineered systems, and don’t need to be connected or plugged in. Think vacation house, mother-in-law or just off the grid. The homes come assembled and equipped in the factory and are delivered ready-to-go.

Hot spot for industry and more is just one of several new additions to the growing City of Lakewood landscape. If you saw The News Tribune article in late March, you know the city is considered an “up-and-coming industrial hot spot” that has seen a huge spike in development to meet the demand for e-commerce distribution centers and logistics facilities. Chicago-based Bridge Development Partners purchased a 4.23-acre property as the future site of Bridge Point Lakewood 90. The property is located close to another warehouse development in the city that will house the new Amazon delivery station slated to open this year, bringing hundreds of full- and part-time jobs to the region.

“Lakewood is a great place for manufacturing and more,” said Becky Newton, City of Lakewood Economic Development manager. “Along with its strategic location, the City’s policies and programs allow for sustainable economic development, installation of infrastructure to allow for development, and planning and vision for target development areas.” Collaboration with the EDB, Port of Tacoma and other state and regional partners ensures issues are addressed as they arise and projects are successful from start to finish.

Beyond Lakewood, the EDB is assisting with other business recruitment projects across Pierce County. We’ll share more details as they unfold. We’re also keeping our eye on these Pierce County properties:

  • BNSF site in the Nalley Valley. New life is being breathed into a long inactive site, located just minutes from I-5 and the Port of Tacoma. Construction is slated to begin on the major industrial development property next year. When finished, the 160-acre site will feature 5 buildings and more than more than 2 million square feet of space.
  • Boeing property: More than 300 acres of undeveloped land adjacent to Boeing’s fabrication site hit the market in late March. Bids on the property were due in mid-April, so we should hear more about a likely buyer, soon.
  • News Tribune site. The News Tribune building on State Street recently sold. As of press time, details of the sale and future development of property had not been announced.
