WEDA Summer Conference eyes equitable future
EDB CEO Bruce Kendall joined fellow economic development professionals and other leaders from across the state June 18-20 at the 2024 Washington Economic Development Association (WEDA) Summer Conference in Spokane.
“Sprinting Towards a More Equitable Future” was the theme of this year’s event. Around 230 conference attendees were treated to an abundance of thought-provoking content and a slate of dynamic and diverse speakers.
Kendall offered these takeaways:
- Andrea Caupain Sanderson, Co-Founder and Co-Executive Director of BIPOC ED Coalition Washington State, gave a talk about the organization she co-leads that provides an effective and welcoming place where BIPOC leaders can gather for support, education and networking. Kendall: “The values they rely on are similar to those we embrace at the EDB, and I urge you to learn more about them.” You can read more about the BIPOC Ed Coalition here.
- Shirline Wilson, Executive Director of Washington Employers for Racial Equity, discussed the work her organization does with 80 major corporations in the state to create equity in BIPOC business communities. Kendall: “This organization is one that many of our larger employers could learn from. They are smaller than the current members of the coalition but could pick up some good strategies for diversifying their staff and boardrooms.”
- John Milne, CEO, Oldivai Capital, gave a presentation on affordable in-fill housing. Kendall: “It’s attractive, yet far less expensive to build because of their assembly system and partnering on properties. They are small but could be on the forefront of finding some solutions for affordable housing.” For example, Oldivai has partnered with hospitals to build housing for custodial and other service workers on underutilized hospital properties. Employees can now get housing close to where they work.
