Work Start Grant Helps Wilcox Family Farms Keep Pace with Growth

One of the largest employers in rural Pierce County just got news to crow about: a boost to help keep it growing, keep pace with changing regulations and keep jobs in the community.

Roy-based Wilcox Family Farms was awarded a $75,000 Work Start grant by the Washington State Department of Commerce, in partnership with the Economic Development Board for Tacoma-Pierce County and Impact Washington, a nonprofit consultant to small- and medium-size manufacturing companies. The grant will help Wilcox train new and current workers in lean enterprise principles and food safety.

Founded in 1909, family-run Wilcox is recognized globally for high-quality and sustainable egg production and agricultural practices. The company has received several awards for innovation. The Work Force grant will enable Wilcox to respond to more stringent government regulations by providing necessary worker and supervisor training. Impact Washington will be involved with that effort.

“We have great employees, and the training funded by the Work Start grant makes them better while enabling us to move forward with our growth plans,” said Andy Wilcox, director of Wilcox Family Farms egg operations.

“Wilcox is one of the largest and longest-running employers in rural Pierce County and plays a critical economic role in the Roy community,” said EDB President and CEO Bruce Kendall. “The Work Start grant will help keep them competitive well into the future.”

Wilcox currently employs 135 people and is looking to fill 15 more positions. The company expects to add 20 new full-time jobs over the next few years.
